MSConfig for Windows 95/98/ME

• Built into Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP is a special tool called the "Microsoft System Configuration Utility" or simply "MSCONFIG." Designed to help the user troubleshoot problems with the computer, MSCONFIG can also be used to ensure that the computer boots faster and crashes less.

• The more programs the user has running on the computer at once, the more likely it is that the computer will either run slowly or even crash. Every time the user boots the computer a multitude of "hidden" programs load in the background. Some of these hidden programs are essential, but most aren't. Turning off some of these hidden programs can significantly increase the computer's performance and reliability.

• If the user downloads the attachment below, it will run a program for Windows 95, 98, or ME that tells the user what programs are loading when he or she starts up the computer.  This can help the user determine what programs he or she does not need to load when the PC boots up.
