How do I improve connection performance for online gaming?

Improving Game Performance

  • Disable unnecessary programs

Disable any programs that take up Internet bandwidth, including messaging systems, chat clients, and file sharing software. When other users access the shared files or send data to the computer, they are using part of the computer's available Internet bandwidth.

  • Avoid downloading

Avoid downloading files while playing Internet games, even from other computers on the Local Area Network (LAN). All computers on the network share the same fixed amount of bandwidth, so downloading files on one computer will take away from the bandwidth available for gaming on another computer.

  • Adjust video settings

Adjust the video settings in the game itself. Although many of the latest games have beautiful graphics that take advantage of the latest features on the computer's video card, these graphics can affect gaming performance. Screen resolution, color depth, and texture size can all affect your game play. All games have different methods of changing the video options, the user can explore the choices available to him or her. Balance the video settings between graphic quality and game performance. Lower graphic settings might be most effective for multi-player and Internet play than the setting used for single-player games.

  • Adjust sound settings

Like video settings, sound settings can affect performance. Experiment with disabling high-quality sound effects to see how doing so affects game performance.

  • Ask for more bandwidth

Because bandwidth affects network performance more than any other factor, the user might want to check with the Internet Service Provider (ISP) to see whether he or she can increase the bandwidth to the computer, usually by purchasing a larger Internet service subscription package.
