How do I get accurate speed test results?

Accurate Speed Test Results

Internet speed tests may vary from site to site and results depend on a number of factors. Our broadband test, although usually correct, may not be exact. It is recommended to take the speed test multiple times to get an accurate estimate of the connection speed.

Speed Test Engine

Speed test engines are a quick and easy way to get an estimate of the speed. Our speed test will check both the upload and download speed. The application will work on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems within all major browsers including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and more.

Be sure to:

  • Run the speed test at least three times, add up the results and divide by the number of times the speed test was run to get an average speed.
  • Run the test at different times of the day.
  • Turn off any file sharing programs before running the speed test.

How to Run the Test

  1. Click on the Speed Test button on the Performance Center page.

  2. The speed test will open in a new window. Click on the Begin Test button.

    Run the speed test

  3. The speed test will first test the download speed. The dials will show the progress of the test.

    Run the speed test

  4. After the download test ends, the upload test will begin automatically.

    Run the speed test

  5. When the test is complete, the results will display below the speed test.

Why does the test fail at the user's IP address?

It's possible that there is something wrong with the setup. Here are a few things that can be done to possibly fix the problem:

  • Make sure that the modem is at least 12 inches (roughly 30 centimeters) clear of anything that emits electromagnetic interference (such as a CRT monitor).
  • Make sure that all cables are not physically damaged and are properly connected.
  • Any Halogen lighting and light dimmers in proximity to the computer can also cause a problem.  If there are any beside the modem, move the lighting further away.
  • Ensure that the Ethernet card is seated properly inside the computer and that the drivers for the Ethernet card are up-to-date.
  • Power cycle the modem. Unplug it for about a minute or two, then plug it back in and let it regain sync.
  • Make sure any software firewalls installed on the pc are disabled temporarily while the test is being run.

If none of these correct the issue, it would be in your best interest to contactthe ISP's technical support and have them do an inspection of the line itself.
