General Gaming Tips

To get the best performance from a system, it's useful to know about the performance areas and terms:

  • Network Performance: relates to how fast the connection is to other gamers or to a game server. Network performance is critical when playing multi player games, especially on the Internet.
  • Computer Performance: relates to the machine - how fast it is what's running, and how it is configured. Computer performance can affect both single player and multi player games. Note: To really understand performance, it is recommended to be familiar with the most common terms associated with performance:
  • Bandwidth: it is the amount of information, or the size, that can be sent through a network connection at one time. A connection with more bandwidth can transfer information more quickly.
  • Frame Rate: is the number of video frames displayed on the screen per second. Television signals are broadcast at 30 frames per second (fps). The frame rate of a video game depends on performance factors.
  • Ping:a protocol for testing whether a particular computer is connected to the Internet. Pinging is done by sending a packet to the computer's IP address and waiting for a response. A user can use this protocol by using the ping command, or by typing “ping” at a Command prompt or MS DOS prompt. Ping is also used by gamers to refer to the number of milliseconds it takes for the packet to return to the computer, as in “What is your ping?”
